Price and choice are the key words: customers need to be able to pay as little as ££300 or find luxury at £3,000- plus. The Big Bed Company's range has been developed over six solid months of research, design and cajoling of suppliers and now includes 16 different bed sizes, in traditional and contemporary designs, produced in leather, suede, pine, oak and wrought iron. Bed linen is kept in stock and beds are made to order within four to six weeks. Although there is demand for the bottom-of-the-range basics, one of the most popular so far has been the Caesar bed, which measures 8ft by 7ft 3in. The couple have been working on the project for a year, selling via the web (www.thebigbedcompany.co.uk). Last month they opened a warehouse just off the M4 at Hayes, so customers could see, touch and recline on the beds. Joanna and Warwick, who have known each other since they started dating while at Leeds University, launched the Big Bed Company in January this year, and married last May. Warwick says: "There isn't any argument because we have our separate roles: I deal with suppliers and admin, Joanna does the creative stuff and works with the customers - though she also listens to my phone calls and interrupts." Joanna pleads guilty: "I can't stop myself, so now I have to leave the room when he makes a call"

Sales of large beds account for about a third of the market. As a nation we are getting bigger, taller and fatter, and squeezing into small beds can cause a bad back and a bad night's sleep. Following research, The Sleep Council recommends that a bed should be 6-8in longer than the sleeper. Since living with each other at Leeds, Joanna Harris (Management Studies 1994} and Warwick Mowle (Economics and Management Studies 1994) have launched the Big Bed Company, the UK's first store that sells larger beds and bed linen for today's growing population. "People are getting bigger, but beds have stayed the same size," said Joanna. "After travelling abroad and sleeping in larger European or North American beds, it's hard for people to return and battle for sleeping space at home," said Warwick. "Beds are supposed to be eight inches longer than the sleeper, so the average UK bed length of six foot three inches leaves many with backache."
